2QMod – Modern Quilters

Modern Quilting is a new and developing contemporary style of patchwork & quilting, and we encourage all from novices through to established quilters of all ages, to be inspired and develop their skills within their craft.  With this new style of patchwork and quilting, along with the development and sharing of skills, the development of a “community” also plays a large part, so we felt it was important to provide an opportunity for existing and new members to get involved.

Our Modern Quilt group meets on the second Saturday of each month for what can be a full day of fun sewing.  All members are invited to attend these days.  These are usually more fun, social days where you can sit, sew and share with other members, so bring along a current project to work on, be it Modern or not.

Most afternoons, after lunch, there will also usually be guest speakers, discussions or mini workshops on different techniques or methods happening and to get involved in if you want to.  More details on these topics for each meeting are listed below.  Whilst the meeting goes from 10am till 4pm, you are welcome to come for the full day of sewing, or join us at any time for just part of it if you want to.

What to Bring:  You are welcome to bring along your sewing machines, cutting equipment & any other tools you require to work on your project.  (Extension cords and irons are available at the meeting for you to use.)  We also encourage you to bring along any Show & Tell to share with the group.  As this is also a longer meeting than most, we also suggest you bring along some lunch, if you plan to stay the whole meeting, and a coffee mug to enjoy the provided morning & afternoon tea.

What is Modern Quilting?

Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by our modern times, often displaying cleaner design elements & features, and a relaxing of traditional rules into guidelines.

There are a variety of different styles incorporated in Modern Quilting, with an emphasis on:

  • the use of modern fabrics and colours
  • graphic designs
  • the use of ‘negative’ space
  • adaptive construction styles
  • the quilting being a design element

Mostly though, it is what you want to make from it.
