2QAQ – Art Quilters

2QAQ is the Queensland Quilters Art Quilters and through this special interest group, we wish to promote art quilts by providing a variety of experiences and inspiration through demonstrations, guest speakers, challenges and projects.

We eagerly share our knowledge and skills and all members of Queensland Quilters are welcome to come along to our gatherings. Contact us and we will let you know what’s happening and what to bring along to our next meeting. Visitors are welcome to attend one meeting or gathering before becoming an individual member of Qld Quilters Inc.

Bring along your sewing & any tools/equipment you need. Tea and coffee is provided, BYO cup.

Join us – you’ll have fun with like-minded quilters and artists.

QLD QUILTERS ART QUILTERS (2QAQ) CHALLENGE 2018

For our challenge in 2018, the theme will be HOME.

Definition of Home:  The place where we live permanently – may be a dwelling/house, place of residence or locality – usually somewhere we feel safe, happy, welcome, nurtured, part of a family group, familiar and at ease.  Often home is a place where we can relax and forget the challenges faced outside in the wider world.  Many members come from various part of the country and overseas, or have travelled elsewhere and returned.

Animals also have homes, and different species of wildlife may require particular habitats to survive.

Home Among the Gum Trees is a popular and well-known Australian song.  For many it evokes feelings of the “Australian home” and its’ uniqueness.  You might like to take inspiration from this.

AIM AND GUIDELINES

The aim is for you to challenge yourself to try something new or different, or use your favourite technique working with a theme that you did not choose.   In doing this it is hoped that you will extend your repertoire throughout the year – either through mini workshops, sharing tips with others or referencing books in the library.

You may create more than one item.

There is no right or wrong way to interpret the challenge.

While it will be lovely to see how each person interprets the theme, there is no need to keep what you are doing a secret (although you can if you prefer).  You are welcome to work on it during meeting days, and seek input from other members.

What items could be created?  The list is endless but here are some suggestions to start the thinking process.

  • Needlecase or sewing set with a motif on each one
  • Three-dimentional piece, eg doorstop or ornament
  • Stitcheries in a small quilt, cloth, runner, wallhanging or bag
  • Cushion / Homewares
  • Framed Piece
  • Sides of a box
  • Canvas
  • Clothing
  • Mixed media

It is hoped that these items will be displayed at the October 2018 Quilt Show on our information stand (works in progress and unfinished items also welcome!)    To facilitate this, items will need to be handed in at our August meeting.  In this regard, please give thought to how your item can be displayed on our stand (eg. Pinned on the wall backdrop or to the tablecloth).

You might also like to keep a few notes along the way about techniques you have used or where your design inspiration came from, so that this can be shared when the item is displayed.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy creating!!
